What impressed me was the depth of expertise in the place. As NCP director Susana Vasquez pointed out, "There are no outside experts here. Every panel, every workshop and every tour is led by Chicago?s very own cutting-edge leaders." And the audience was filled with hundreds more experts and accomplished pros, all of which bodes well for the future of the industry.

Also the diversity of the crowd and the easy relations among participants was a hopeful sign. There's no question that racial and ethnic differences and tensions exist. But our industry is well integrated and has strong and deep leadership among African-Americans and Latinos, another hopeful sign.

All in all, a very positive experience.

I think my biggest "aha" moments came when I was leading the first foreclosure roundtable. One of the attendees from San Diego talked about how we need to start working with our folks (when needed) to do "foreclosure planning" - not unlike retirement or any other type of planning to help people make that difficult transition if it is unavoidable. He suggested that relationships with good and affordable rental owners need to be forged, along with the usual financial planning so that next time (with home ownership) is more successful. Another plug for the critical need to better prepare folks to keep their homes forever or close to that!

What excited me about this conference is that this is the first time that Local LISC sites have actually brought together the folks they work with from individual communities, cities, and local funders.  It was a very powerful gathering.  It is the beginning of the development of the national  comprehensive community development "relationship infrastructure" necessary to foment a national comprehensive community development movement.

At 57, I still have at least one national movement left in me.
